Inside Ocean Science Discovery Center
Enter the Ocean Science Discovery Center and you'll find a self-guided exhibit area with hands-on activities for adults and children; informational displays, marine artifacts and free educational literature about the ocean.
Inside are two "Discovery Laboratories" where school groups get direct experience with an array of equipment, including compound microscopes, microbiological water test equipment, incubators, a weather station and more. The Ocean Science Discovery Center also has equipment for student use in the field, such as salinity refractometers, beach profiling gear and Secchi disks.
Presenters, teachers and students can create their own presentations using audiovisual equipment, computers, overhead projectors, mounted digital projectors, projection screens and computer/Power Point projectors.
An onsite library offers research papers, journals, publications, and video, DVD and audiotapes about the ocean, as well as Internet access to marine information. It's open to the public, so anyone can access it easily.
Because Ocean Science Discovery Center is adjacent to Maui Ocean Center and Maalaea Harbor, we offer programs that link laboratory, schoolroom, cultural experiences and field trips on the "floating laboratory" boats owned by Pacific Whale Foundation.
Interdisciplinary learning at Ocean Science Discovery Center
After a field trip on Pacific Whale Foundations stable, high-tech catamarans, students come back to the lab at Ocean Science Discovery Center to analyze the samples they've collected, compile the information on the computer and perhaps communicate the results and their ideas for marine conservation with classes on other islands via high-speed Internet access or video conferencing.
For teachers, Ocean Science Discovery Center provides special workshops and professional development opportunities. For Maui visitors and residents, the Ocean Science Discovery Center offers a variety of displays, activities, talks, video presentations and programs that promote lifelong learning and long-term stewardship of Hawaii's marine environment.
Building on 25 years of marine education programs
Ocean Science Discovery Center is an expansion of the award-winning marine education programs of Pacific Whale Foundation that have served more than one million visitors since 1980. In addition, Pacific Whale Foundation's marine education programs reach out to 10,000 Maui schoolchildren each year.
The Pacific Whale Foundation is a non-profit IRS 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Donations to the Ocean Science Discovery Center capital campaign are tax deductible to the extent allowed by U.S. law.
